About WABSA

West African Bird Study Association (WABSA) was formed in April 1994, by indigenous Gambian youths, who are concerned citizens to preserve the country’s flora and fauna. 

WABSAs main objective is to support governmental and non-governmental agencies to formulate policies that will effectively and practically mainstream bird study and environmental protection, which play a vital role in sustainable development of the country. 

The association is registered as charitable and non-profit making conservation non Government Organisation (NGO Reg N˚ 77).  Its program of activities are based on objectivity and reflect on the current situation   regarding birds, Environment and people. 

The programmes are directed by the Board of Directors and The General membership

Strategic Objectives

    • To establish and protect community/school bird sanctuaries

 

    • To restore mangrove forest and terrestrial lands forests

 

    • To conduct research on bird ecology and its associated species

 

    • To improve livelihood of communities through natural resources management

    • To conduct research on Marine and coastal Biodiversity

 

Our Vision

In 20 years, WABSA is poised to embrace nature, especially birds living in harmony with people and contribute to the achievement of the government target of 15% lands protected and conserved for sustainability.

Our Mission

To inspire every Gambian, particularly the youth, who are the future leaders of the country, to embrace nature conservation, particularly birds and contribute to the advancement of the government target 15% of the land as protected areas.

Bird sanctuaries

Livelihoods and communities

WABSA is promoting alternative sustainable livelihood activities through vegetable garden schemes, aquaculture, cashew processing...

Nature restoration

WABSA has implemented GEF SGF small grand fund. The Title of the Project is Restoration of Ecological Fucntion and Enviromental Services of Nium National Park.

Ecotourism

Promoting eco-tourism activities by improving park infrastructure facilities such as the construction of a visitor’s centre, provision of 2 boats , construction of 2 photo hides , a bird watching tower and training of Eco Guides.
